Formation and early years.

In the summer of 1978 a series of public meetings in Blairgowrie culminated in the formation of the Blairgowrie and District Hillwalking Club.

The meetings, organised by Kenneth Stewart (the Community Education Officer for Blairgowrie), were held on 17th June and 20th July to discuss the formation of the "Blairgowrie and District Hillwalking and Rambling Club".

"This is your chance to make new friends, keep fit and explore the Scottish Hills" the notices in the Blairgowrie Advertiser announced to attract potential Club members to the meetings.

The message succeeded and about 50 people attended the meetings to show their interest in and enthusiasm for the formation of a hillwalking club.

Those attending included "experienced walkers as well as complete beginners, some young… some not so young". (This still describes the membership at the present time).

The club was formally constituted at a meeting on 7th September 1978 in the Hill Hall, Upper Allan Street, Blairgowrie. The meeting was chaired by Kenneth Stewart and resulted in a first committee of:

   Chairman: Graham Smith
   Vice Chairman: Chas Davidson
   Secretary: Sheena Stuart
   Treasurer: Maurice Hanson
   Meet Secretary: None selected
Committee members: Douglas Rennie, Elizabeth Page,
             Tom Morrison and Robin Shepherd.
At a meeting on 19th October 1978 Ian Mitchell was elected
             as a 9th committee member.

Before this meeting two trial walks had been undertaken so that the beginners could get an idea of their capabilities. In the event they learned that "they can walk 10 miles quite easily." Furthermore "all are looking forward to graduating to slightly higher ground".

The name Blairgowrie and District Hillwalking Club was chosen at this meeting and has remained the name of the club ever since.
Club Name
Extract from the minute book showing the "election" of the club name.

The initial membership was 50, 48 of whom joined at the first meeting. The subscriptions were set at £1 for full membership and 50p for juniors. By the end of the year the total membership was 60 full members and 15 juniors.

The first club walk was on Sunday 17th September 1978 to Glen Doll. Forty seven walkers enjoyed "fine weather" and seem to have covered two walks - one being the Munros Mayar and Dreish, the other, less strenuous, to Loch Brandy.

The Blairgowrie Advertiser report also mentions "Although some teething problems were encountered the majority of the participants agreed that the meeting had been enjoyable."

It was also at this point that walks were planned for every third Sunday (which continues at present). Future walks mentioned were:

  • 8th October: Moulin (near Pitlochry)
  • 29th October: Linn o'Dee.
  • Undated/planned: Glenshee, Amulree and Bridge of Cally.

It can be seen that the initial walks were within the local area and essentially based on recognised hill tracks.

Membership from 1978 to 2002

The histogram above shows the membership levels for each year from 1978 to the present. Both Full and Junior memberships are shown. Note that the value for 2002 is not yet the final.

After the initial enthusiasm when the club was formed and many families joined - the membership drops rapidly over 4 years to a low of 36 members in 1982/83. The proportional drop in full and junior members suggest that some of the families were leaving, possibly because they had expected a greater rambling component in the clubs walks (as indicated in one of the original names for the club).

From 1983 onwards there is a slow but steady increase to the low 40s in 1990/91. Then there is a rapid increase to 74 members in 1995/96 which probably coincides with the much greater interest in hill activities in general and with the MCofS insurance requirement for a visitor to become a member after two visits.

After peaking in 1996 the membership reaches a stable level of between 60 and 70 members up until the present time.

The fact that the club survived the 1982/83 low is a testament to the core of enthusiastic hillwalkers that made up the club and committee at that time.

Potted History

8th November 1978
The first talk. Inspector Deas of the Tayside Police Mountain Rescue Team gives a talk to members of the club.
6th December 1978
Mr. Steve Batchelor of the Faskally Outdoor Education Centre gives a talk on map reading and compass work.
27th March 1979
The first AGM. The treasurers report states that there were 60 adult and 15 junior members. Members from primary school age (6 years) to senior citizens were out on walks during the year. Treasurer also stated that "the largest item (of expenditure) was for advertising". Subscriptions were set at £3.00 (300% increase!) for full membership and £1.00 for juniors.
20th December 1979
Mr. Boffey of the Ancrum Outdoor Centre gave a talk on Hillcraft, Hill Equipment and Treating Accident Victims..
27th March 1980
AGM. A donation of £10.00 was made to the Tayside Mountain Rescue Team (the start of a long association). From the minutes: "Mr Smith also talked of the frustrations of ordering a bus of suitable size. Members appeared to be inclined to put down their name for a seat on a bus, and then forget to cancel". A £1.00 fine was proposed and accepted at the AGM. (Mr. Smith is, of course, Graham Smith).
26th March 1981
AGM. First mention of club badges. "Tea and Biscuits" were available in the Hill Hall.
26th March 1982
AGM: First "excellent" meal and first time AGM held in a hotel (Kintrae House Hotel).
25th March 1983
AGM: Again in the Kintrae House Hotel. Chairmans (Graham Smith) report ended "to the effect that the time spent in the pub after then Mount Blair walk was too short".
Another comment was: That the "leader for the day should be known at each meet". A Map Library was suggested and also recorded was the suggestion for an "old boot library". Did they mean book? Neither of these appears to have got very far. Given the cost of maps and the state of old boots it is perhaps not surprising!
29th March 1984
AGM: First AGM in the Golf Hotel, Rosemount, Blairgowrie. First mention of taking part in the Tayside Mountain Rescue Flag Day in Dundee.
29th March 1984
AGM: First AGM in the Golf Hotel, Rosemount, Blairgowrie. First mention of taking part in the Tayside Mountain Rescue Flag Day in Dundee.
29th March 1985
AGM: Second mention of Tayside Mountain Rescue (TMR) Flag day. Last one had raised £200.00. Committee considered that contribution to the flag day meant that there was no need for a direct contribution.
28th March 1986
Club badges were discussed again - agreed not to proceed due to the cost. Also Tom Morrison and Penny Barron raised the idea that the club should consider corporate membership of the Scottish Rights of Way Society.
27th March 1987
AGM: Comments on abseiling without ropes at Craig Y Barns. Discussion about a "local" (Blairgowrie and Rattray) TMR flag day.
25th March 1988
AGM: TMR flag day still in Dundee, there were no definite plans for Blairgowrie.
Arrangements for 10th anniversary walk on 11th September. Walk in Glen Doll area with a meal in the Clova Hotel.
A second weekend meet during the year was proposed to happen in August, September or October.
March 1989
AGM: The issue of advertising costs is raised again.
March 1990
AGM: "Support TMR flag day in the town". It looks like the first year in which the flag day was held in Blairgowrie.
March 1991
AGM: The first time questions were raised about third party insurance for the club. This was to be investigated.
26th March 1993
AGM: The first AGM to be held in the Moorfield House Hotel (after 9 years at the Rosemount Golf Hotel). This resulted in "farcical developments" with the, then, Proprietor of Rosemount Golf Hotel ** threatening the club with legal action. Investigation by committee members showed that there was "not the slightest" claim against the club.
A special General Meeting would be called to discuss the legal options for Insurance Cover. The TMR flag day would be held in Blairgowrie on 7th August 1993.
**The hotel has since changed hands and is now a welcome haven for the Silver Jubilee committee meetings.
March 1994
AGM: First entry by BDHC into the "Mountain Mind Quiz".
